Acupuncture is defined as the stimulation of special points on the body resulting in a desired physiologic effect. Acupuncture therapy is generally used when medications are not working or are having side effects and when surgery is not feasible. The following conditions, among others, may respond to acupuncture therapy.

  • Musculoskeletal conditions
    • arthritis
    • hip dysplasia
    • intervertebral disc disease
  • Dermatologic conditions
    • lick granuloma
    • chronic allergic dermatitis
  • Neurologic conditions
    • traumatic nerve injury
    • epilepsy
  • Respiratory conditions
    • asthma
  • Gastrointestinal conditions
    • chronic irretractable diarrhea and constipation

Acupuncture therapy is usually performed once a week for for at least six to eight weeks. Improvement may be seen sooner, or may sometimes take longer, especially for long-standing conditions. Treatments are then tapered off to whatever is necessary to maintain the animal's improvement. Normally, patients are seen once every two to six months for continued therapy.
